Renowned Tipster and Broadcaster, Ed ‘Longshot Ted’ Quigley serves up his best bets for the UK action this weekend…

Ted’s bets for Saturday, Feb 3:

Find the following picks for Saturday races. Play on the races with our best expert rated horse racing betting sites:

  • Sandown 2.35 – Hermes Allen– bet with bet365
  • Musselburgh 2.50 – Afadil each way – bet with BetUK
  • Sandown 3.45 – Bangers And Cash each way – bet with BetMGM

Sandown 2.35 – Hermes Allen

We have a small but select field for the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novice Chase, with five runners due to go to post at the Esher venue. On ratings, there isn’t a great deal to split them, but I think in an ideal world connections would be looking for much softer ground than they are likely to get.

Underfoot conditions should be absolutely fine however for the Paul Nicholls trained HERMES ALLEN, who is a class act on his day who is a former Grade 1 winning Novice Hurdler. Hermes Allen has made a smart start to life over fences, bolting up in a Grade 2 on Chase debut at Newbury (Nickel Back well beaten behind), and did little wrong in defeat when in Grade 1 company next time out, when he, along with the others, couldn’t lay a glove on Il Est Francais (who is next season’s King George favourite).

It is also possible that three miles stretched the stamina of Hermes Allen that day, and coming back down in trip for this encounter should be ideal. I think he will take a lot of beating.

Musselburgh 2.50 – Afadil each way

AFADIL looks to be the each-way option in the Scottish County Hurdle. He has been hitting the crossbar in recent races, including when third at this track last time out. That was over 2m4f, and he looked like a suspect stayer at the trip on rain-softened, so he will be much happier reverting back to this course and distance.

He was a convincing winner of a Listed event over C&D on this card 12 months ago, and looks ready to rock and roll here, eased to a mark of 124. The man of the moment Freddie Gingell is in the saddle claiming 5lb, and I am finding it hard to knock the combination out of the frame – they look to have rock solid claims for the in-form Paul Nicholls team.

Sandown 3.45 – Bangers And Cash each way

BANGERS AND CASH gets the each-way nod from me in this wide open encounter. The 8-year-old represents the red-hot BEN PAULING team and this individual is still relatively unexposed over fences, winning four of his ten starts.

He is versatile in regards to ground conditions, and after a couple of below-par efforts, he shaped with much more encouragement when third in a competitive staying chase at Newbury last time out, where the application of first-time cheekpieces had a galvanising effect.

Eased to a mark of 133, he is just 1lb higher than when last successful, and jockey Ben Jones is riding at the top of his game at the moment.

Ted’s Bets for Sunday, Feb 4,

  • Musselburgh 1.20 – Musselburgh – bet with bet365
  • Musselburgh 3.35 – Thunder Rock– bet with BetUK

Musselburgh 1.20 – Liari

Paul Nicholls and title-chasing Harry Cobden combine to try and land the Scottish Triumph Hurdle with LIARI. The son of Cracksman has made a favourable impression so far for the Ditcheat maestro, winning both races, including at Listed level at Aintree last time out.

Quicker ground here poses a different question, but he is a strong traveller, so I don’t expect there to be too much of an issue with handling a livelier surface. He looks a progressive type who can land this before going on to tackle lofty company at Aintree. This looks like a good opportunity to maintain the unbeaten record and gets the vote from me.

Musselburgh 3.35 – Thunder Rock

THUNDER ROCK is a horse with a lot of ability, but sometimes has been plagued by jumping issues. We saw evidence of that, when he was sent off favourite for the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham last time out when his jumping went to pieces.

However, this previous course and distance winner over Hurdles will be much happier back on a flatter track and the prospect of some better ground can aid his cause. The Olly Murphy team are in good shape at present, and the Warwickshire handler reaches for the first time head-gear. Off 146 there should be more to come with the excellent Gavin Sheehan in the saddle.

Don’t forget Ed will be back on Tuesday as he provides his best bets for the action at Market Rasen and Taunton.
