This weekend will see Strickland’s first defence of the UFC Middleweight Championship belt he won back in September with a unanimous decision victory over Israel Adesanya in Australia, which also won him Performance of the Night at UFC 293.

The American carries a 28-5 record into the last edition of Ultimate Fighting Championship, and has won three fights on the trot since his most recent defeat, which came against Jared Cannonier back in December 2022.

13 of the 32-year-old’s victories have been won by decision, with 11 coming by knockout, and four by submission.

Saturday’s challenger for the middleweight belt is du Plessis of South Africa, a fighter who has won all six of his previous fights as a member of the UFC, most recently getting the better of Robert Whittaker in a second round TKO at UFC 290 in Las Vegas back in July.

The 30-year-old boasts a record of 20-2, and hasn’t tasted defeat since October 2018 in a KSW 45 fight in London against Roberto Soldic, being knocked out in the third round.

UFC 297 also sees a title fight in the Women’s Bantamweight division, as the American Raquel Pennington takes on the Brazilian Mayra Bueno Silva for the belt which has been left vacant following Amanda Nunes’ retirement last year.

Pennington carries a 15-8 record with her but has won her last five fights, though it’s been over a year since her split decision Ketlen Vieira just over 12 months ago, but is the bookies’ underdog heading into her title fight on in the small hours of Sunday morning.

Bueno Silva is 4/7 favourite to end the night as bantamweight champion, and takes a 10-2-1 (1) record after her victory over Holly Holm in her last fight in July was overturned after the Brazilian tested positive for ritalinic acid.

To win the fight (bet365):

  • Sean Strickland – 8/11
  • Dricus du Plessis – 11/10
  • Raquel Pennington – 6/4
  • Mayra Bueno Silva – 4/7
