Saturday horse racing tips

Newbury

  • 2.05 – Betfair Denman Chase: Shishkin 8/13 (2pts)
  • 2.40 – Spirit Chase: Edwardstone 7/4 (2pts)
  • 3.15 – Betfair Hurdle: Lookaway 12/1 each-way (1pt)& Under Control 20/1 each-way (1pt)
  • 3.50 – Limited Handicap Chase: Inch House 6/4 (1pt)

Shishkin

He’s going to take some beating if he’s at the same level he showed in the King George, which by all accounts he should be.

It wasn’t a bad jump that unseated his rider at Kempton either, just an unfortunate and unlikely stumble of the legs – which has just added to punters’ misfortunes when backing the Henderson horse having refused to race at Ascot in the Grade 2 1965 Chase in November.

But he was going so well that day and contending with the longer distance expert of Bravemansgame over 3m despite only taking on that kind of distance for the second time.

He’s got real untapped potential still and even at 1/2 looks a nice shot to add to the bets this weekend, even if just to pad out some accas.

Edwardstone

One of the biggest races of the day is the Grade 2 Betfair Exchange Game Spirit Chase – setting up a Boothill vs Edwardstone match-up in the betting with outsiders Editeur Du gite, Funamble Sivola, Calico and Amarillo Sky.

Edwardstone looks the pick of the bunch as his consistency in top Grade 1’s shouldn’t be discounted after running a poorer race stepping up to 2m4f last time out for the first time.

Boothill has looked good in victory but the level of those victories still remains to be seen against some of the top chasers while it’s also a little concerning after his fall in the Christmas Meeting at Kempton.

Edwardstone has remained around 2’s or a little shorter throughout the week while Boothill has gone from clear favourite out to 9/4 with a fair bit of risk attached to the Harry Fry-trained horse.

Lookaway & Under Control

It could be that all 24 runners, the maximum amount for the race line up on Saturday afternoon’s feature race – the Premier Handicap.

Ocastle Des Mottes could be well-weighted coming into this for trainer Willie Mullins, who makes his debut for the Irish yard.

He’s drifting in the market though and it’s an incredibly tough hurdle to come into with a range of horses having the potential to be solid graded runners in the coming months and years.

Under Control made a great return from wind surgery at Doncaster at the end of January.

She placed second behind Ashroe Diamond in the Grade 2 mares hurdle and just ahead of Gala Marceau which is great form, especially with the potential of further improvement on her second run since her operation.

Inch House

Mister Coffey somehow still doesn’t have a win over fences yet in 12 attempts, despite continually being around this kind of mark, as he’s placed second six times.

He has good form in behind the likes of Gaillard Du Mesnil but it’s tough to side with him to win based on his consistency not to get his head in front when he maybe ought to.

Inch House is potentially well weighted against him too as he’s already won twice over fences in just four attempts, which includes a close second place to Stumptown at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day.

It was heavy ground that day and it could be a little tacky with lots of rain during the week.

He’s not been upped in the weights for that second but maybe should have been as he has improvements to make which could see him outrun his current mark quite well.
