Arsenal vs Luton Town predictions

Arsenal were the happier of the two teams after a 0-0 draw with Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Many felt Arsenal had to win that match in order to take control of the Premier League title race. The logic was comprehensible. The Gunners have a trickier run-in than City, so opening up a larger lead over the champions would have been handy.

Yet it is worth remembering that no visiting side has won at the Etihad Stadium since before the 2022 World Cup. Moreover, City had scored in 47 consecutive league matches in front of their own supporters. It is very hard for opposing teams to pick up positive results at their ground.

In that light, a 0-0 draw was a decent outcome for Arsenal. They defended smartly and solidly, in stark contrast to their display in a 4-1 defeat at the Etihad last season.

The centre-back duo of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes was – not for the first time this term – outstanding, but Arsenal’s grit and resolve was a success for the collective.

Yet that battling performance at the Etihad will be worth nothing if Arsenal do not follow it up with back-to-back victories over Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion in the coming days.

That second game looks the harder of the two, with Arsenal having to travel to the Amex Stadium. Before then, Arteta’s team should add another three points to their tally against the Hatters.

The scoreless stalemate against City was the first time in 2024 that Arsenal have failed to win a Premier League match. They have been sensational since the turn of the year. It is easy to forget that their title chances were widely dismissed after two defeats over the festive period.

There is still a huge amount of work to be done, however, and no one at Arsenal should be getting carried away after their neutralisation of City.

Arsenal vs Luton Town betting tips

Arsenal should return to winning ways when Luton Town visit the Emirates Stadium in the midweek round of fixtures.

Arsenal to win to nil – Evens (Paddy Power)

Luton Town got off to a fantastic start at the weekend, going 1-0 up at Tottenham Hotspur within three minutes.

But Rob Edwards’ side could not quite hold on. Spurs equalised via an Issa Kabore own goal early in the second half, before Son Heung-min netted a winner late on.

Remarkably, Luton have scored in 18 successive Premier League games. That is the longest such streak in the top flight.

Keeping a clean sheet will therefore not be straightforward even for Arsenal, who have the best defensive record in the division. Luton have a well-honed style and their direct approach has caused many teams problems.

But as Arsenal demonstrated at the weekend, it is hard to create chances against them. The Gunners have kept 12 clean sheets in the league, comfortably the best record around.

By dominating possession and camping out in Luton’s half, Arsenal will keep the visitors far away from their own goal. That bodes well for their chances of shutting out Edwards’ men.

Arsenal -2 handicap – Evens (Paddy Power)

Arsenal showed a different side to their game against Manchester City than what we have seen in the rest of 2024.

The Gunners have turned on the attacking style this calendar year, blowing numerous teams away. They have scored six goals against West Ham United and Sheffield United, five against Crystal Palace and Burnley, four against Newcastle United, and three against Liverpool.

Their eight wins in the league since January 1 have been by an average margin of 3.63 goals. A repeat here would make this bet successful.

Luton have been competitive for much of the campaign. Only once since August have they lost a game by three clear goals.

That was a 4-1 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield and this trip to the Emirates Stadium will be just as tough. Arsenal can get the job done without too much discomfort.

Kai Havertz to score any time – Evens (Paddy Power)

Kai Havertz had a difficult start to his Arsenal career. He has long been something of an enigma as a player, and many Gunners fans could not see why the club spent ÂŁ65m to bring him in from Chelsea last summer.

But Havertz has been much more impactful over the last couple of months, whether playing up front or as a No.8. With Gabriel Martinelli out injured, the Germany international should continue through the middle here.

Havertz did not get many chances at the weekend, but that was because of Arsenal’s game plan.

He has still scored four goals in his last five league outings, while he was also on target for Germany in a 2-0 victory over France last month.

Against a Luton backline that is struggling to keep clean sheets, Havertz can make his mark.
