Arsenal fans waited behind at the Emirates to brighten up Emile Smith Rowe’s day with a wholesome message.

After winning man of the match against Luton Town on Wednesday night, TNT Sports interviewed Arsenal star Smith Rowe at the Emirates, which had been criticised for being too quiet.

Luton star Tom Lockyer, appearing as a pundit as he continues recovery from a cardiac arrest, handed the 23-year-old the award to the glee of a group of Arsenal fans behind the camera.

In a wholesome moment, they loudly cheered having stayed behind long after the full-time whistle.

Smith Rowe looked pleased as punch with the award and the reception he received from the Gunners faithful and spoke about how thankful he was.

He said: “Being at home here, the fans really help me. Better to play at home when you haven’t played in a long time and you’ve got that support behind you.

“I have been getting so much support from not just the players but the staff, it feels like a family in there.

“I have been here since I was nine years old so to have that [standing ovation] as I am coming off is amazing.

“It is really good to have the support of the fans, I feel it every time, even when I am warming up sometimes and I don’t come on!”

Smith Rowe reminded everyone at the Emirates why he had been earmarked as one of their best academy graduates with a fine performance against Luton Town.

As well as setting up Reiss Nelson for the second goal in a 2-0 win, he was instrumental in the opener after winning the ball back high up the pitch before Martin Odegaard scored.

And considering that Smith Rowe has managed just 20 minutes in the Premier League since January, it was a fine outing that proves the Gunners coach can rely on his fringe players if he needs them.

Arteta was full of praise for the youngster after his performance, calling him a ‘joy to watch’.

“I love him as a player, he is a joy to watch. How he moves, changes direction and how physical he was today without the ball,” the Spaniard said.

“He went into duels and won a lot of them and was thinking with that killer instinct to play forward and make things happen.

“When Emile is in that moment, it’s very difficult to stop him. Today he helped us a lot to win the game.”
